Frames have multiple types of materials and components that can be damaged in both fire and flood damage, along with poor storage. Poor storage can range from storing art and frames in high-humidity climates or in direct sunlight. Both dramatically affect artwork and frames. For example, water and humidity can cause the molding on frames to deteriorate and pop off. Molding is typically made from plaster or gesso. Those same molding pieces are adhered to the wood frame. When water or humidity reaches the wood frame, the wood fibers expand and contract.
To repair and restore warped framing, a mold is made from the last remaining sections of the frame. That mold is used to create a plaster casting which is then attached to the wood frame with missing pieces. Once reattached, the new castings are painted to match the rest of the frame.
Lastly, the artwork is reinstalled into the newly restored frame.
