Animal hides have been used for instruments, clothing, and warmth for hundreds of years. Animal hides can retain soot and smoke odors so well that it usually requires multiple phases of cleaning and deodorizing to truly remove it all.
This animal hide came to us with a significant sized pink ink stain and suffered smoke and soot damage from a house fire. Prior to cleaning the animal hide, a chemical cleaning test and analysis was conducted to choose the best-localized treatment for the ink stain to lift. We then conducted multiple cleaning sessions until all soot particles were removed. We used a dry cleaning method to remove soot particles and protect the integrity of the hide. A wet cleaning method was used for the ink stain to lift and further improve the overall restoration of the piece. Luckily, it was not extremely sooty, so only a wet cleaning method was needed for stain removal.
