When restoring ceramics or porcelain, a two-part epoxy adhesive is used, as well as other fillers, paints and glazes to create a seamless fix. This beautifully detailed blue and white porcelain vase was knocked over and the accident created a significant chip. As always, multiple steps are taken to ensure a flawless repair.
The first step to restoring ceramics and porcelain is a deep surface clean. In this case, the vase was cleaned in its’ entirety. The missing section was recreated using a non-shrinking, durable filler. After attaching the recreated section, we finely sanded and smoothed out the filling. The repair was then tediously and meticulously in-painted, continuing and matching the pattern on the vase. To protect the repair, the vase was sealed with a protective, UV-stable varnish that also prevents yellowing from age.
