Different fabrication and repairing techniques are employed when working with glass and crystal works of art. Subsequently, repairs can vary in complexity. Sometimes, it’s a messy break with lots of tiny shards. Others are a clean break, allowing a more flawless repair. As always, the first step in any art restoration or repair work is to completely clean the pieces before restoration.
This antique glass candlestick is part of a pair. A cat knocked over one of the sticks. So, the owners felt that it was worth repairing to keep the pair intact. Luckily, it was a clean break, meaning no shards were missing. After cleaning, the two glass pieces were glued back together using a UV-curing glass adhesive. The UV-curing glass adhesive helps to fill the cracks between the two glass pieces, minimizing the appearance of the damage sustained. While the repair is slightly visible, the owners still get to keep a beautiful antique set of candle holders that maintain the memories shared and allows new memories to be made in the future.
