Thorough cleaning and deodorization are vital steps needed to remove the corrosive agents found in smoke and soot that degrade and weaken art. This Carte de Viste Photograph and gilded frame, damaged in a house fire, exemplifies how different the frame, mats, and photograph look prior to sustaining fire and acidic smoke damage.
Multiple steps were taken to bring this antique (est. 1880s) photograph and its’ frame back to their original vibrancy. First, the framing components and photograph needed to be completely disassembled and cleaned. This process began with removing the backing, nails (in this case), artwork and matting, and lastly, the glass protecting the antique photograph.
Every omponent was individually surface cleaned and underwent a deodorization treatment removing any lingering odors. While disassembled, the gilded molding on the wood frame was touched-up where pieces were missing. When reassembled, we utilized acid-free foam core and replaced the nails with non-corrosive hardware. Lastly, a dust cover and hanging hardware were added, completing the piece.
